In addition to having appropriate credentials and experience in the field, Seneca faculty are committed to refining their teaching practice through reflection, formative self-evaluation and formal and informal professional development. This includes participation in professional networks to ensure currency in their disciplines and areas of expertise. They employ a variety of teaching and assessment methods, grounded in the scholarship of teaching and learning, to inspire their students within a learning environment that promotes student success. They select learning activities that are authentic and engaging and evaluate learning using a variety of valid and reliable tools and techniques, embedded in current industry knowledge and practice.

The Seneca Standards of Practice for faculty is designed to: 

  • Promote a common language that fosters an understanding of what it means to be a reflective and effective teacher
  • Identify the practices and actions of the teaching faculty
  • To guide the professional judgement of the teaching faculty
  • Guide the implementation and evaluation of professional learning for the Seneca teaching community

Students and Student Success

Educators need to know how learners learn and develop conceptual understandings to design and implement appropriate learning experiences. Faculty should understand individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure their lessons are inclusive and that each learner can meet high standards.

Professional Knowledge

Faculty understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and their discipline to create learning experiences that are both accessible and meaningful for learners assuring mastery of the content. The educator applies professional knowledge to promote student learning and are knowledgeable in pedagogical content knowledge, assessment, and evaluation, and the use of technology to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity and collaborative problem solving related to local and global issues.

Professional Practice

Faculty applies their professional knowledge and experiences to ensure that students are engaged and meeting learning outcomes. They use a variety of instructional and assessment strategies to promote deep understanding of content areas and their connections. They use multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth and to guide decision making. Faculty understands and reflect on curriculum, ethics, research and related policies and procedures to inform their practice.

Professional Learning

Faculty are committed to ongoing professional learning and continuously improve their teaching practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their professional communities.
